Understand margin vs markup →
01 / PROFIT

What you keep

The money left from one sale after the costs you include. It can be negative if you sell at a loss.

Selling price − total cost
02 / MARGIN

A share of your sale

Your profit as a percentage of revenue. A 30% margin means keeping 30p of each £1 after included costs.

Profit ÷ selling price × 100
03 / MARKUP

A return on your cost

Your profit as a percentage of total cost. Without optional costs, this is the usual markup on purchase price.

Profit ÷ total cost × 100

A QUICK EXAMPLE

Buy for £10.
Sell for £15.

With no extra costs, you keep £5. That is a 33.33% margin and a 50% markup. The same profit produces different percentages because the starting number changes.

Add £2 of delivery and packaging, and profit falls to £3. Small costs can make a big difference.

A few useful answers

How do I find a selling price for a 30% margin?

Choose “Find selling price”, enter your cost and set the target to 30. With a £10 cost and no other costs, the price is £10 ÷ 0.70 = £14.2857…, rounded up to £14.29. Adding 30% to £10 gives £13, which is a markup calculation and produces only a 23.08% margin.

Is this gross profit or net profit?

With just cost and selling price, this is a simple gross profit estimate. Including selling costs gives a contribution estimate after those costs. It is not your business’s net profit unless you also account for all relevant expenses and taxes separately.

Can the calculator show a loss or a zero-cost item?

Yes. A selling price below your total costs shows negative profit and margin. If costs are zero, markup shows N/A because dividing by zero is undefined. A zero selling price also makes margin undefined.

What is a good margin?

There is no single percentage that works for every business. Compare your price with demand, competitors, overheads and the money needed to support your business. A positive result here only shows that the costs entered are covered.

Do you save my calculations?

No. Calculator inputs are processed in this browser and are not sent to SphereCraft by the calculator. There is no account or calculation history. Read our privacy and cookie policy for information about hosting and contact emails.
